How often should transmission fluid be changed?
For a car or SUV in normal use, every 30,000–60,000 miles depending on the platform. For trucks that tow, run off-road or see high heat in St. George and Hurricane, every 20,000–30,000 miles. Heat and load break down every transmission fluid, including fluids sold as lifetime fill, and a regular transmission fluid change protects the transmission from that wear.
Does towing affect my transmission?
Yes. Every tow puts thermal stress on transmission fluid, and thermal cycling is the main source of wear in automatic transmissions. Trucks that tow UTVs to Sand Hollow, boats to Sand Hollow Reservoir or fifth wheels down the Virgin River Gorge should be on an accelerated transmission service schedule, and a transmission cooler is a worthwhile addition for regular towing.
