How to Prepare Your Machine for Sand Dunes, Slickrock, Rock Crawling & Desert Trails
Sand Hollow State Park in Hurricane, Utah is one of Utah's best-known off-road destinations. The park features the red sand dunes of Sand Mountain, miles of technical slickrock and rock crawling terrain, desert trail systems connecting to Warner Valley, and the Sand Hollow Reservoir for boating, jet skiing, and beach recreation. Riders and drivers travel from across the United States—and internationally—to experience what Southern Utah has to offer.
The terrain at Sand Hollow is diverse and demanding. UTVs, side-by-sides, Jeeps, trucks, and purpose-built off-road vehicles all run these environments, and each type of terrain puts different stress on a machine. Sand dunes load the CVT and drivetrain. Slickrock and rock crawling obstacles punish suspension, steering, and skid plates. Desert trails work shocks, cooling systems and air filtration. Setup that matches the terrain is what keeps a machine reliable across all of it.
At MST Motorsports, our factory-trained, certified technicians service the machines that ride Sand Hollow, preparing them before a trip and repairing them afterward. This guide covers the setup and maintenance that matter most—suspension repair and service, shock rebuild and re-valve, clutch tuning, steering durability, cooling system reliability, and preventative maintenance.
Sand and desert terrain require a different suspension approach than trail riding or rock crawling. At Sand Hollow, you need a setup that absorbs high-speed impacts, handles G-outs in the dunes, and keeps the chassis stable across washboard desert roads. That means proper spring rates, correct shock valving, and ride height tuned for the terrain you're actually riding.
For dune riding, a slightly softer compression setting helps the suspension absorb the constant undulations of the sand. For desert trails, firmer low-speed compression prevents bottoming out on rocks and ledges. Many riders benefit from a shock repair, rebuild, or re-valve tuned specifically for Sand Hollow conditions—something we handle in-house at MST Motorsports.
We also perform suspension diagnostics, repair, and service to improve ground clearance and travel, and our alignment and steering service ensures your machine tracks straight and handles predictably after any suspension change.
Sand riding puts extreme load on the CVT system. The constant high RPM, heavy throttle inputs, and resistance from soft terrain generate enormous heat in the belt and clutches. Belt failures are one of the most common issues we see from riders coming back from Sand Hollow—and in most cases, the root cause is a clutch system that wasn't tuned for the conditions.
Proper clutch repair, service, and tuning sets the primary and secondary clutches to engage in the right RPM range for your machine, tire size and terrain. For Sand Hollow, that means a setup that keeps the belt cooler under sustained load while holding strong low-end engagement for climbing dunes.
We also recommend carrying a spare belt and checking belt deflection before every ride. If your belt is glazed, cracked, or showing signs of heat damage, it's time for a replacement.
A pre-ride inspection is the check that finds a wear item before the trip rather than on the trail. Before heading to Sand Hollow, every machine should have engine oil and coolant levels, CVT belt condition, tire pressure and tread, brake pad thickness, axle boots, and suspension components looked over for leaking shocks, loose bolts or worn bushings.
Sand riding is particularly hard on air filters, and fine desert dust clogs them quickly. We recommend a high-flow pre-filter, and inspecting and cleaning the filter before and after every Sand Hollow trip.
MST Motorsports offers pre-ride inspections, diagnostics, and UTV maintenance in Washington, Utah before you load up.
Shocks work hard at Sand Hollow, where heat, fine sand and constant high-speed impacts wear seals, degrade shock oil and dull internal valving over time. Shocks that feel soft, bottom out or no longer control body roll are due for service.
We perform in-house shock repair, rebuild, and service for Fox, King, Elka, and Walker Evans. A full rebuild includes new seals, fresh shock oil, inspection of internal components, and re-valving if needed. For riders who hit Sand Hollow regularly, confirm the service interval against your shock manufacturer's recommendation, and expect to service sooner if you're running hard in the dunes.
We can also set up your shocks with valving tuned specifically for sand and desert terrain, giving you better control in the dunes without sacrificing performance on hardpack trails.
After busy weekends at Sand Hollow, our shop sees a predictable pattern of failures. The most common issues include shredded CVT belts from heat and clutch slip, blown shock seals from sand contamination, overheating engines caused by clogged radiators and air filters, torn axle boots that let in sand and destroy CV joints, and cracked or bent suspension components from hard landings and G-outs.
We also see a fair number of electrical issues—sand and dust work their way into connectors and cause intermittent faults, sensor failures, and wiring problems. And riders who skip oil changes between trips often come in with premature engine wear from contaminated oil.
Most of these failures are preventable with proper setup and regular maintenance. If you're heading to Sand Hollow, a stop at MST Motorsports for powersports diagnostics, repair, and service and a pre-ride check covers the list above.

Learn MoreYes — a whip flag is required for riding the Sand Mountain dunes at Sand Hollow State Park, and standard state park entry fees apply. Your UTV also needs to be street-legal or trailered in and unloaded at the OHV staging area. Check Utah State Parks for current whip height requirements before your trip.
Before heading out, check CVT belt condition and deflection, air filter (fine dune sand clogs filters fast), coolant and oil levels, tire pressure, axle boots, and suspension bolts. MST Motorsports offers a pre-ride inspection service in Washington, UT.
Yes — we offer UTV pickup for service in the Washington, St George, Hurricane, and Sand Hollow area. Call ahead at (435) 256-8899 to arrange it.
For Sand Mountain dunes, most UTV riders drop to 6–10 PSI for the sidewall flex and footprint sand traction needs, and paddle tires can be run slightly higher. Air back up to spec, typically 12–18 PSI, before riding slickrock or the paved connectors. Exact pressure depends on your tire, wheel size and vehicle weight, so ask us and we will set it with you.
MST Motorsports is roughly 20 minutes from the Sand Hollow State Park entrance. We are at 987 S 1900 East, Washington, UT 84780, between St George and Hurricane on I-15.
