High-speed desert riding demands suspension that absorbs repeated impacts from whoops, ruts, and washboard while holding the chassis stable at speed. That means progressive spring rates that resist bottoming, compression damping that controls the chassis through successive hits, and rebound damping that recovers in time for the next one.
Heat management matters just as much. Sustained high-speed running heats shock absorbers until the fluid thins and damping fades. We set desert suspension up with the right fluid volumes, reservoir configuration, and damping settings to hold performance through a long ride. For dedicated desert machines, external reservoirs and bypass tubes add heat capacity.
Technical terrain demands articulation — each wheel travelling independently to keep traction on uneven ground. That calls for softer spring rates than a desert setup and damping tuned for slow-speed control rather than high-speed impact.
On Jeep builds we configure droop travel, bump stop engagement, and sway bar disconnects for full articulation on the trail. On rock-focused UTVs we adjust preload, compression, and rebound to keep all four tires planted while holding the chassis off the obstacles.
Most Southern Utah drivers need one setup that covers several things — trail riding, moderate speed, occasional rock sections, and a comfortable highway run to the trailhead. An all-around setup balances those with moderate spring rates, versatile damping, and a ride height matched to the terrain you see most.
We start with a conversation about how the vehicle actually gets used. A truck that tows a UTV to Sand Hollow on weekends has different needs than a Jeep running trails daily, and knowing which one you are decides where the compromises go.
Ride height is the foundation. It sets ground clearance, tire fitment, travel distribution, alignment angles, driveline angles, and handling. Leveling kits remove factory rake and open clearance for larger tires. Lift kits raise the whole vehicle. Incorrect ride height cascades into alignment problems, component wear, driveline vibration, and compromised handling.
After an install we verify ride height at multiple points, check side-to-side symmetry, and confirm travel in compression and droop. On adjustable coilovers we dial the target with spring preload, typically setting static sag around 30–40% of total travel. On UTVs, ride height comes from shock preload, spring selection, and limit strap configuration. Sagging springs get replaced with OEM or upgraded units, add-a-leaf packs, or coilovers depending on the platform.
Geometry correction goes beyond alignment. Once suspension is modified, factory geometry changes, and alignment adjustment alone cannot bring it back. We address caster and camber with adjustable upper control arms on trucks and adjustable arms on Jeep solid axles, pinion and driveline angle with arms, shims, or differential drop kits to remove highway-speed vibration, and CV joint operating angles to prevent clicking, vibration, and repeat CV failure on lifted trucks and UTVs.
Steering geometry gets the same treatment — dropped pitman arms, adjustable drag links, high-steer kits, and correct-length tie rods sized to the modified ride height. On Jeeps that is what removes the bump steer that makes a lifted rig dart when it hits a bump. Correct geometry is what lets a Hunter Hawkeye Elite alignment hold.

Desert setups prioritize high-speed stability, bump absorption, and heat management — typically longer-travel shocks with aggressive compression damping and lighter rebound. Rock crawling setups prioritize maximum articulation and slow-speed control on uneven surfaces — softer spring rates and a different damping profile.

A leveling kit raises the front of a truck to match the rear ride height, removing the factory rake. It uses spacers, strut extensions, or replacement springs depending on the platform. We verify ride height, alignment angles, and headlight aim after installation.
Alignment adjusts toe, camber, and caster within the existing geometry. Geometry correction addresses the underlying angles and often requires hardware changes — adjustable control arms, pinion shims, differential drops — before alignment can be set correctly.
