Serpentine belts get a visual and load inspection for cracks, glazing, and rib separation, and get replaced with OE-quality belts. Most vehicles land in the 60,000 to 90,000 mile range, or sooner at visible cracking — four or more cracks per inch is the industry threshold — glazing, or rib chunking. A broken serpentine belt takes power steering, charging, and cooling with it in one snap. Tensioners weaken and idler bearings fail well before the belt does, so the whole assembly gets inspected, not just the belt.
Timing belts get replaced on the manufacturer interval, usually 60,000 to 100,000 miles. On an interference engine — many Hondas, Toyotas, VW and Audi platforms, and older diesels — a broken belt lets the pistons hit open valves, which means bent valves, damaged pistons, and often a cylinder head. The water pump gets replaced at the same time where it is accessible behind the belt. Timing chains last longer than belts but are not lifetime parts: long crank and misfire codes point to stretch, and the tensioners and guides get replaced with the chain.
Upper, lower, heater, and bypass hoses get inspected for swelling, softness, and pinhole leaks, with a squeeze test at every service — a hardened hose is close to failure. Cooling-system pressure testing reveals pinhole seepage and weeping clamps, and any suspect hose is photographed in the inspection report. Power steering high-pressure and return hose leaks are a common failure point on high-mileage trucks, and both get diagnosed and replaced. Hose failure at summer highs above 100°F is a roadside breakdown waiting to happen, and the 60,000-mile major service is where the full belt and hose set gets evaluated together.
Corroded terminals rob starting current and mimic a dead battery. Terminal cleaning with anti-corrosion treatment runs alongside the battery load test and charging-system check, which matters more here than most places: batteries that average four to five years nationally run closer to two and a half to three and a half years in Southern Utah heat, and three to four years for AGM. Heat accelerates internal plate corrosion and evaporates electrolyte. Annual testing from year two on is the practical interval.
Heat, dust, sand, and trail use accelerate wear. What a suburban car might get away with skipping, a Sand Hollow daily or a truck that tows in July heat cannot. We tune our maintenance recommendations to actual conditions — not generic mileage stickers written for a mild coastal commute.
The seasonal argument runs both directions. Summer loads the cooling system, the fluids and the battery. Cold mornings do the opposite kind of damage: oil thickens and takes longer to reach bearings on start-up, battery cranking capacity falls off, tire pressure drops with the air temperature, and a rig that starts the day cold and finishes it warm cycles every seal and hose through that swing.
