Re-valving changes the internal shim stacks that control how fluid flows through the shock — adjusting compression and rebound damping characteristics to match your specific riding conditions, vehicle weight, and performance goals.
Factory shock valving is designed for average conditions and average riders. If you ride primarily in Sand Hollow's deep sand and high-speed desert, you need different valving than someone who mostly rock crawls at low speeds. Re-valving during a rebuild is the most cost-effective way to transform your machine's ride quality and handling without purchasing entirely new shocks.

Southern Utah desert conditions are among the harshest environments for shock absorbers. Fine sand infiltrates shaft seals, accelerating wear and introducing contamination to the shock oil. High ambient temperatures reduce oil viscosity, and extreme temperature cycling stresses seals. Washboard desert roads create sustained high-frequency shaft movement that generates heat and accelerates oil breakdown.
Regular shock service — including oil changes and seal inspection — is the most cost-effective way to maintain ride quality and extend the life of expensive shock absorbers. We recommend 40–60 hour service intervals for machines used at Sand Hollow and in desert conditions near St George and Washington, Utah.
Shock degradation is gradual, and most riders adapt to the changing feel without realizing how much performance they've lost. Watch for a ride that feels floaty or wallowy, excessive nose dive under braking, body roll in corners, bottoming out on bumps that used to feel controlled, visible oil weeping on the shock body, harsh ride over whoops, or a noticeable reduction in rebound control.
On UTVs and side-by-sides, degraded shocks are especially noticeable at speed — the rear end kicks out, the front pushes through turns, and the suspension feels harsh without actually controlling the vehicle. If ride quality has changed or the shocks have more than 40–60 hours of hard off-road use, it's time for an inspection. A shock that used to feel plush now feeling harsh is a rebuild signal.
