Best Mud-Terrain Tires for Sand Hollow: A Southern Utah Buyer's Guide
Why Sand Hollow Eats Tires
Sand Hollow State Park outside Hurricane, Utah isn't one terrain — it's four. You've got deep sugar sand at the dunes, sticky red clay after a storm, sharp basalt ledges on West Rim, and polished slickrock everywhere in between. A tire that crushes one of those will get shredded by another. That's why generic "all-terrain" tires from a chain store almost always disappoint Southern Utah owners by the second season.
What to Look For in a Sand Hollow Tire
Sidewall Construction
The single most important spec for Sand Hollow is sidewall ply rating. Sharp basalt at Toquerville Falls and the ledges on Top of the World will gash a 2-ply sidewall on the first ride. Look for 3-ply or higher sidewalls on UTVs and load range E (10-ply equivalent) on trucks and Jeeps.
Tread Void Ratio
Big voids clear sand and mud but get squirrelly on slickrock. Tighter blocks grip rock but pack with mud. For a do-it-all Sand Hollow tire, target a medium-void tread with siping for slickrock bite.
Pressure Range
You'll air down to 8–12 PSI for sand and 18–22 for rock. Make sure the tire has a published pressure curve and a stiff enough bead to hold air at low pressures without beadlocks — or commit to beadlocks if you're running really low.
Our Top Picks by Vehicle
UTV / Side-by-Side
- Tensor Regulator A/T (32–35") — The Sand Hollow benchmark. 8-ply sidewall, great on rock, surprisingly good in sand if you air down. What we put on most RZR Pro R and Can-Am X3 builds in the shop.
- System 3 XTR370 — Best blend of mud, rock, and dune. 10-ply, aggressive shoulder lugs for ledge climbs.
- EFX MotoClaw — Lighter than the Tensor, great choice if you're prioritizing clutch life and acceleration over outright sidewall protection.
Lifted Trucks & Jeeps
- Toyo Open Country M/T — Quiet on the highway from St George out to the trailhead, brutal sidewalls on the rock.
- Nitto Trail Grappler M/T — Best slickrock grip we've tested in the 37–40" range.
- BFGoodrich KM3 — Proven Sand Hollow performer. Slightly louder on pavement but the carcass is bombproof.
Tires We'd Skip for Sand Hollow
We see the same warranty calls every spring: budget mud-terrains with 2-ply sidewalls (any "M/T" under $200/tire), passenger-rated A/Ts, and stock UTV tires past their first season. They'll get you down a dirt road — they won't survive a full Sand Hollow weekend.
