Why Your Battery Keeps Dying in Southern Utah
A battery that keeps dying in Southern Utah is usually heat damage, a charging system that is not keeping up, or something on the vehicle drawing current after it is shut off. MST Motorsports tests batteries, charging systems and parasitic draw in Washington, Utah, and in this climate the first of those three is far more common than most drivers expect.
Heat kills batteries here, not cold
Cold weather is what gets blamed, because cold is when a marginal battery finally fails to start the engine. But the damage that made it marginal happened in July. Heat drives the chemical reaction inside a lead-acid battery faster than it was designed to run, accelerates grid corrosion on the plates, and evaporates water out of the electrolyte.
Under-hood temperatures in a truck sitting on Southern Utah pavement in summer are far above ambient, and ambient here is already high. A battery that would give five or six years in a temperate climate commonly gives noticeably fewer here, and it gives them without a warning sign until the morning it does not crank.
That is the pattern worth knowing: the battery does not fail on the hot day. It is injured on the hot day and fails on the first cool one, when the same battery has to push more current through colder, thicker oil.
The three causes, and how they differ from the driver's seat
The battery itself is worn out
A battery at the end of its life starts fine one day and cranks slowly the next. Jump starting works, and the vehicle runs normally afterward, which is what convinces people it was a one-off. Then it happens again a week later.
The tell is that it gets worse in a pattern tied to temperature and to how long the vehicle sat. A load test measures what the battery can actually deliver rather than what its voltage reads at rest, and a battery can show a normal resting voltage and still fail a load test.
The charging system is not keeping up
If the alternator or its regulator is not putting enough back in, the battery runs down over days of normal driving and the symptom looks identical to a dead battery. The difference is that a new battery does not fix it — it dies too, a few weeks later.
Sometimes there is a warning: a battery light, dimming headlights at idle, or accessories behaving oddly with the engine running. Often there is not. Charging output is measured at the battery with the engine running and under load, and a serpentine belt and tensioner get inspected at the same time, because a belt slipping on a hot pulley produces the same undercharge.
Something is drawing current after shutdown
A parasitic draw is a circuit that never goes to sleep. The vehicle starts fine if driven daily and is dead after a weekend, which is the signature. Modern vehicles legitimately draw a small amount to keep modules alive; the problem is a draw well above that.
On the trucks and Jeeps we see, aftermarket wiring is the common source — a light bar, a winch, a stereo amplifier, a compressor or an accessory relay wired to a constant supply instead of a switched one. It is diagnosed by measuring current at the battery with everything asleep and then pulling fuses one at a time until the reading drops.
What gets measured
Three separate measurements, because the three causes produce the same complaint. A load test on the battery. Charging output at the battery with the engine running and under electrical load. Parasitic draw with the vehicle fully asleep, and a fuse-by-fuse isolation if the draw is high.
Terminals and grounds get inspected as part of it. Corrosion on a terminal and a loose or corroded chassis ground both produce hard starting and a charging fault that follows no logic, and both are common on vehicles that see dust and washboard.
Lifted trucks, UTV haulers and accessory loads
A truck that tows a trailer, runs a winch and carries a light bar asks more of its electrical system than a commuter does, and it often sits for days between uses. Those two things together — high accessory load and long idle periods — are the combination that exposes a marginal battery or an aftermarket circuit wired to constant power.

Can a battery test fine and still leave me stranded?
A resting voltage reading can look normal on a battery that cannot deliver current under load. That is why a load test is the measurement that matters, not a voltmeter across the terminals.
Does a bad ground cause this?
