Pulling a trailer up SR-18 or through the Virgin River Gorge in July is the hardest thing most vehicles here ever ask of their cooling system. Load raises engine output, grade holds it there, and desert air gives the radiator less to work with. A system that looks fine on a commute is the same system doing all of that with a toy hauler or a side-by-side on the back.
That load lands on more than the radiator. We inspect the fan clutch, radiator core and fins, hoses and clamps, coolant condition, and the transmission cooler and its lines, because transmission fluid sheds its heat into the same airflow. Pressure and combustion-leak testing catch the weak points before a grade finds them for you.
Coolant does not last forever. The corrosion inhibitors in modern long-life coolant break down over time, and once they do the cooling system starts working against itself from the inside — heater cores plug, radiator cores corrode, water pump seals fail. The manufacturer service interval exists for that reason.
Each platform gets the coolant it specifies — Dex-Cool, ELC, OAT, HOAT, G-05 — because mixing types causes gelling and rapid corrosion. A proper flush and refill every 60,000 to 100,000 miles is one of the cheaper ways to extend the life of every other cooling component.
The load side of that matters here too. A loaded truck holding temperature through summer highs above 100°F, a towing climb up to Pine Valley, and stop-and-go around Washington all ask more of the coolant than a highway commute does, which is why we check coolant condition by test rather than by odometer.

Every 30,000–50,000 miles for most gas engines and every 60,000–100,000 miles for extended-life coolants — but Southern Utah heat shortens those windows. We inspect coolant condition on every service visit and recommend a flush based on actual chemistry, not just mileage.

Any one of those is worth a look.
