    CLUTCH REPAIR & CVT SERVICE

UTV Belt Replacement, Clutch Tuning & CVT Calibration for Sand Hollow and Southern Utah Riding

    Call 435-256-8899

MST Motorsports provides expert UTV clutch repair and CVT service in St George, Washington, and across Southern Utah — see our St George UTV clutch tuning page for RZR, X3, and KRX specifics. The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) clutch system is one of the hardest-working and most commonly failed components on any powersports machine — and Sand Hollow's deep sand dunes make it work even harder.

Whether you need a simple belt replacement, complete clutch rebuild, or precision CVT tuning for your specific riding conditions, our technicians understand how these systems work and how to optimize them for reliability and performance in Southern Utah's demanding desert terrain.

    CVT BeltInspection & Replacement

The drive belt is a wear item that requires regular inspection and timely replacement. A worn or damaged belt can break without warning, leaving you stranded on the trail. Signs your belt needs attention include a burning rubber smell, belt dust accumulation, visible cracking or fraying, glazed edges, or reduced acceleration response.

Our belt service includes removal and inspection of the old belt, cleaning of clutch sheave surfaces, deflection measurement and adjustment, and installation of a quality replacement belt. We stock OEM and aftermarket belts for most popular Polaris and Can-Am platforms.

    Primary & SecondaryClutch Service

Primary Clutch Service: The primary (drive) clutch controls when and how quickly power is transferred to the belt. We service the weights, springs, ramps, and bushing to ensure smooth, consistent engagement. Worn or improperly weighted primary clutches cause delayed engagement, poor acceleration, and premature belt wear.

Secondary Clutch Service: The secondary (driven) clutch controls the backshift and final drive ratio. We service the helix, spring, and roller components that determine shift characteristics and belt tension. A properly set up secondary clutch improves power delivery, reduces belt slippage, and extends belt life significantly.

Complete Clutch Rebuild: For machines with high hours or extensive wear, we perform complete clutch rebuilds with new bushings, weights, springs, ramps, and helix components. This restores the CVT system to like-new operation and provides an opportunity to optimize the setup for your specific riding conditions.

Clutch Tuning forSand Hollow & Desert Riding

Sand riding at Sand Hollow State Park puts unique demands on the CVT system. Deep sand creates sustained high-RPM load that generates tremendous heat in the clutch and belt. Factory clutch calibrations are designed for average conditions — not the extremes of Sand Mountain's dunes.

Our Sand Hollow clutch setups optimize engagement RPM, shift rate, and belt tension to minimize heat buildup while maintaining strong acceleration in sand. We calibrate based on your specific machine, tire size, altitude, and riding style. The result is longer belt life, more consistent power delivery, and reduced risk of the overheating-related failures that are the #1 cause of trail-side breakdowns in deep sand.

    PerformanceClutch Upgrades

For machines running oversized tires, modified exhaust, or ECU calibrations, the factory clutch calibration is almost always wrong. We install performance clutch kits and components from Aftermarket Assassins, STM, and EPI — recalibrating the clutch system to match the actual power delivery, load, and use case. The result: cooler belt temps, smoother engagement, longer belt life, and a noticeably more responsive machine.

    Why Proper ClutchingMatters

    Better Acceleration

Optimized power delivery from idle to redline.

    Extended Belt Life

Proper setup reduces premature belt wear.

    Smoother Operation

Eliminates clutch noise and harsh engagement.

    Peak Performance

    Maximizes your UTV's power potential.

    Frequently AskedQuestions

Why does my RZR belt keep burning up at Sand Hollow?

Sand Hollow's combination of deep sand, high ambient temps, and sustained wide-open throttle loads the CVT harder than factory clutch settings can handle. We tune Polaris RZR clutches specifically for Southern Utah conditions — altitude, heat, and sand — so the belt runs cooler and lasts longer.

What's the difference between a clutch tune and a belt replacement?

A belt replacement swaps the worn belt but doesn't fix the underlying cause of belt failure. A clutch tune recalibrates the primary and secondary — weights, springs, helix — so the belt runs cooler, engages properly, and lasts longer. We tune before recommending belt replacements as a routine cycle.

Can you upgrade my clutch for better performance?

Yes. We install performance clutch kits from Aftermarket Assassins, STM, and EPI that improve engagement, reduce belt heat, and tune power delivery for desert terrain and Sand Hollow dune riding — especially on turbocharged Maverick X3 and RZR Pro/Turbo platforms.

How often should I replace my UTV drive belt?

Belt life depends heavily on riding conditions. In Sand Hollow's deep sand, belts may last 500–1,000 miles. On hardpack trails, belts can last 2,000+ miles. We recommend inspecting the belt at every service interval and replacing when you see cracking, glazing, fraying, or when the belt width measures below the manufacturer's minimum spec.

What causes UTV belts to break prematurely?

The most common causes are improper clutch tuning, riding past the belt's service life, excessive heat from sustained high-RPM sand riding, improper belt deflection, and load at low speeds. Proper clutch calibration and regular belt inspection significantly extend belt life.

Does elevation and terrain change how the clutch should be set up?

Yes. Sand Hollow sits at roughly 3,200–3,700 feet, and that altitude plus the sand-vs-slickrock load profile and your tire size all change what the clutch should do. Generic online kits don't account for it — we set weights, springs, and helix for how you actually ride here.

Do you offer clutch service for Polaris RZR and Can-Am Maverick?

Yes. We service Polaris (RZR Pro R, Pro XP, Turbo R, XP 1000, Ranger) and Can-Am (Maverick X3, Maverick R, Trail, Commander, Defender), plus Kawasaki KRX 1000 — we also take on Honda and Yamaha work; call ahead and we'll confirm the fit. Each platform has unique clutch characteristics and we calibrate accordingly.
