Fox, King, or Elka — which shock is right for Southern Utah desert riding? We break down the differences, valving considerations, and what we recommend for Sand Hollow and beyond.

Why Shock Choice Matters in the Desert

Southern Utah's terrain is uniquely demanding on suspension. A single ride at Sand Hollow can include deep sand whoops, sharp slickrock ledges, fast desert washes, and slow rock crawling. Each of these surfaces rewards different damping characteristics — and no stock shock is optimized for all of them.

At MST Motorsports in Washington, UT, we build, rebuild, re-valve, and tune shocks for all of these conditions. Here's what we've learned from thousands of hours of desert shock work.

    Fox Shocks: The All-Rounder

Best For: Riders who want a proven, reliable shock with wide aftermarket support

    • Fox 2.5 Factory Series — Excellent for UTVs and trucks. Internal bypass or external reservoir options. Great fade resistance in desert heat.
    • Fox Live Valve — Electronic damping adjustment. Expensive but effective for mixed-terrain riding.
    • Valving notes: Fox tends to ship with firm compression valving. For sand dune riding, we often soften low-speed compression and add rebound to prevent bottoming on whoops.

Fox shocks are the most commonly serviced shock in our shop. Parts availability is excellent, and re-valve options are well-documented.

    King Shocks: The Performance Standard

Best For: Serious desert riders who want maximum tunability and heat management

    • King 2.5 Coilover with Remote Reservoir — The gold standard for desert UTV racing. Massive oil volume keeps temperatures stable during long, fast runs.
    • King OEM Performance Series — Great upgrade for trucks and Jeeps over stock. Adjustable compression via external knob.
    • Valving notes: King shocks are highly tunable. We can set up compression and rebound stacks specific to your weight, tire size, and terrain preference.

King's heat dissipation is unmatched in this price range. If you're doing long dune runs or high-speed desert washes, King is hard to beat.

    Elka Shocks: The Value Play

Best For: Riders who want quality adjustable shocks without the King/Fox price tag

    • Elka Stage 5 — Compression and rebound adjustable. Excellent for UTV trail riding and moderate dune use.
    • Elka Legacy Series — Piggyback reservoir design. Good heat management for the price.
    • Valving notes: Elka's factory valving is generally well-suited to trail riding. For aggressive sand use, we stiffen rebound to manage whoops.

Elka is a strong choice for riders who want adjustability and quality but aren't racing.

What We Recommend for Southern Utah

There's no single "best" shock — it depends on how you ride. Here's our general guidance:

Mixed trail / dunesFox 2.5 Factory SeriesReliable, well-supported, great all-around

    Rebuild Intervals for Desert Conditions

Desert dust, heat, and impact loads wear shocks faster than any other environment. Our recommended service intervals:

    • UTVs (heavy use): Every 40–60 hours
    • UTVs (moderate use): Every 80–100 hours
    • Trucks and Jeeps: Every 15,000–20,000 miles or annually

Signs your shocks need service: fading performance on long rides, leaking oil, excessive body roll, or harsh ride quality.
