6.6L Duramax and Allison Service Intervals: Normal Versus Severe
GM runs the L5P Duramax on an oil life algorithm rather than a mileage interval, which works fine until the truck spends its summers towing in 105-degree heat. The rest of the schedule is fixed mileage, and a few of those numbers are worth knowing before you need them.
GM's Published 6.6L Duramax Intervals
The figures below come from the Chevrolet and GMC 6.6L Duramax Diesel Engine Supplement and the Silverado 2500HD/3500HD Owner's Manual, covering the 2020 through current L5P range. Where GM's document does not publish a figure, that is stated rather than filled in.

Oil spec on the diesel is API CJ-4 or CK-4 in SAE 15W-40, or 5W-40 below 0 degrees F. The dexos1 specification applies to the gasoline 6.6L, not the Duramax, and that mix-up happens more often than you would think. Capacity is 10 quarts with the filter, using the ACDelco PF63 filter. The fuel filter is the ACDelco TP1015.
Two clarifications on the table. The transmission line is not a typo: GM's own maintenance tables schedule an Allison fluid and filter change only on the severe schedule inside the 150,000-mile range shown. If your truck tows, that 45,000-mile figure is your interval. And GM's diesel supplement lists a single serviceable fuel filter part for the L5P. Whether some model years carry a second physical filter element is not something we could confirm from a GM document, so we do not claim it.
The Fluid Specification That Costs an Allison
The 10L1000 takes DEXRON ULV. Not DEXRON VI. The ULV in the name is ultra low viscosity, and it exists because the ten-speed's clutch control and hydraulic circuits were designed around a thinner fluid. DEXRON VI is the correct fill for a great many other GM transmissions, it is on every parts shelf in the county, and it is the wrong fluid for this one.
This is the single highest-consequence specification on the truck, because the error does not announce itself. The transmission takes the fill, drives out of the bay, and the damage shows up as shift quality complaints and clutch wear thousands of miles later, by which point nobody connects it to a fluid service. If you are having transmission service done anywhere, the fluid part number is worth confirming before the pan comes off.
GM's Severe-Service Definition, Word for Word
GM publishes an explicit list, and unlike some manufacturers it is short enough to check yourself. A vehicle is on the severe schedule if it is mainly driven in heavy city traffic in hot weather, mainly driven in hilly or mountainous terrain, frequently towing a trailer, used for high-speed or competitive driving, or used for taxi, police or delivery service.
Read that against a truck registered in Washington County. Hot weather is most of the year. Hilly or mountainous terrain describes every direction out of town. Frequent towing covers a large share of the HD trucks here. Most Duramax owners in Southern Utah qualify on the first two without towing anything, which puts the transfer case on 22,500 miles and the Allison on 45,000.
Regen and the Short-Trip Problem
GM documents both automatic regeneration and a driver-triggered manual regeneration through the Exhaust Cleaning menu in the driver information center. Manual regeneration becomes available when the filter reaches 90 percent full; at 100 percent the truck attempts an automatic self-clean if it gets roughly 30 minutes of qualifying driving.
GM names the conditions that prevent the filter from cleaning itself: extended slow-speed driving, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, short drive cycles, and stationary PTO operation. That is a description of a work truck in a small town. A Duramax that does five-mile runs across Washington and then shuts off is going to accumulate soot faster than it burns it, and the fix on the menu is there precisely for that pattern.
DEF on these trucks is a 7.0-gallon tank, and the fluid must meet ISO 22241 or carry the API Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Mark. GM warns against non-certified fluid. DEF freezes below 12 degrees F, and GM's owner guidance is to check the DEF level at each fuel stop.
On the high-pressure fuel pump: we are not going to tell you which pump is in your truck. GM's owner-facing documentation does not name the injection pump supplier or model, and the pump-generation charts circulating online are not sourced to GM. The maintenance item that actually exists is the fuel filter, at 22,500 miles or when the truck asks.
Towing the Virgin River Gorge
The northbound climb out of the Gorge is a sustained pull at highway speed, in heat, usually loaded. GM's own severe-service list already covers it twice over: mountainous terrain and frequent towing. Three systems take the load.
Transmission temperature is first, which is what the 45,000-mile severe interval on the Allison is for. Fluid that works near the top of its temperature range ages faster than fluid in a truck that stays in the valley.
Brakes are second, on the descent. The exhaust brake takes a share and the pads, rotors and fluid take the rest. Trailer brake function and gain get checked alongside, because a trailer not carrying its share sends everything forward to the truck.
Cooling is third, and there are two circuits to look at. The primary system holds 28.5 quarts of DEX-COOL; the low-temperature circuit that handles charge-air and EGR cooling has its own reservoir holding about 2 quarts. Coolant condition, hose condition, fan operation and the cleanliness of the charge air cooler and radiator core all matter more here than they do at sea level in mild weather.
Front End and Steering on an HD Truck
A 2500HD or 3500HD carries a heavy front axle before a bumper, a winch or a plow mount goes on it. The wear points are the ball joints, the pitman and idler arms, the tie rod ends and adjusting sleeves, the steering damper, the steering gear and its mounting, and the wheel bearings. On a lifted truck the geometry moves and the loads move with it.
Worth an inspection: wander that needs steady correction on I-15, a shimmy that starts over a bump, uneven inside-edge tire wear, play at the wheel, or a clunk on turn-in. Alignment gets set for how the truck sits, including its lift and tire package. GM's manual also carries a specific caution against pressure-washing axle and transfer case seals, which is worth knowing if the truck gets washed after every dirt road.
