    Ram's published 6.7L Cummins intervals, the 500-hour oil ceiling, the two-stage fuel filter system, and why the 68RFE and the Aisin AS69RC do not take the same fluid.

    Ram publishes three ceilings on a Cummins oil change: 15,000 miles, 12 months, or 500 engine hours. Around St George the hour meter is usually what gets there first, and most owners never look at it.

    Ram's Published 6.7L Cummins Intervals

    The figures below are from the Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual, the 2022 edition unless noted, cross-checked against the 2019, 2020 and 2023 editions. Ram does not publish two parallel schedules the way some manufacturers do. There is one maintenance table, and severe use is a trigger attached to individual line items inside it. Where the guide does not publish a figure, that is stated rather than filled in.

    Oil spec is 10W-30 meeting Mopar Material Standard MS-10902 and API CK-4 above 0 degrees F, and 5W-40 synthetic to the same standards below 0 degrees F. The manual notes that products meeting Cummins CES 20081 may also be used. The oil change indicator runs on a duty-cycle algorithm rather than fixed mileage and needs resetting after the service.

    Two things we are deliberately not putting a number on. Ram's maintenance table branches the 68RFE and Aisin transmission fluid services and the axle and transfer case services across many mileage columns, and the column-to-mileage mapping differs by model-year printing; the structure is described below without a single quoted figure. And there is no valve lash adjustment interval in the Ram consumer maintenance schedule. If you have seen one quoted, it did not come from the owner's manual.

    The 500-Hour Limit Is the One That Bites Here

    Ram's severe conditions, as the manual states them, are high ambient temperature, short trips, heavy loading, trailer towing, off-road use, and law enforcement use. Any of those shortens intervals. Individual line items add their own triggers: police, taxi, fleet or frequent trailer towing for the transfer case and the 68RFE, and those plus off-road use for the axles.

    The 500-hour ceiling sits outside all of that, and it is the figure that catches Southern Utah trucks. A work truck that idles on a job site, a tow rig climbing at low road speed, or a truck doing short local runs accumulates hours far faster than miles. At an average 25 mph over its working life, a truck reaches 500 hours somewhere around 12,500 miles. The hour reading is in the vehicle information display, and it is worth looking at before you book an oil service on mileage alone.

    The Two-Stage Fuel Filter System

    The 6.7L Cummins in these trucks filters fuel twice: an engine-mounted filter and water separator rated at 3 microns, and a chassis-mounted filter rated at 5 microns. Ram's maintenance table schedules both at the same 15,000-mile points, which means they are replaced together. They are different parts, and doing one without the other leaves half the system on old media.

    Water is the failure path this system exists to stop. High-pressure common rail components are lubricated by the fuel passing through them, and water displaces that lubrication. Ram publishes no separate severe-duty fuel filter mileage; severe use is flagged generically as shortening intervals. When contamination does reach the high-pressure side, debris moves through the rail into the injectors, which is why contamination is a fuel-system-wide diagnosis rather than a single part. Ram publishes no scheduled replacement interval for the high-pressure pump or the injectors. They are repair items, not maintenance items.

    68RFE Versus Aisin AS69RC: the Fluids Are Not the Same

    This is the detail that costs money when it goes wrong. The 68RFE takes ATF+4. The Aisin AS69RC does not; it takes Mopar ASRC automatic transmission fluid or an equivalent to that specification. They are different fluids with different specifications, and the manual lists them separately.

    Which transmission a truck has is set by engine output, not trim. Stellantis' 2019 Ram Heavy Duty press material states the standard-output 6.7L Cummins pairs with the 68RFE six-speed, and the High Output 6.7L, the 1,000 lb-ft engine offered on the 3500, pairs exclusively with the Aisin AS69RC. That pairing has carried through the current body style, but the build sheet settles it for a specific truck rather than the badge.

    On intervals, the manual schedules Aisin fluid changes beginning at 60,000 miles with fluid-and-sump-filter service appearing at later points, and it gives the 68RFE a normal-duty fluid and filter change late in the table plus an accelerated severe-duty row for police, fleet or frequent trailer towing. We are describing the structure rather than quoting one mileage, because the column alignment varies between model-year printings. Bring the guide that came with your truck, or give us the year and we will pull the correct table.

    For a truck that tows regularly, the severe row is the correct one either way. Ram's trigger is frequent trailer towing with no qualifier attached, so a 3500 pulling a fifth wheel a few times a month is on it.

    DPF, DEF and Regen

    Ram documents the short-trip problem directly, and the wording is specific. When the filter reaches 80 percent of maximum storage capacity, the truck displays Exhaust Filter XX% Full, Safely Drive at Highway Speeds to Remedy. The manual attributes that condition to exclusive short-duration and low-speed driving cycles where the aftertreatment never reaches regeneration conditions, and states that driving at highway speed for as little as 45 minutes can complete the regeneration.

    The message progression is documented: Regeneration In Process, then Regeneration Completed. If it goes unresolved, Exhaust Service Required, See Dealer, with regeneration disabled and a fault code stored, and then Exhaust Filter Full, Power Reduced, See Dealer, which is the derate.

    One warning in the manual is worth repeating because it is easy to trip: resetting the oil change indicator early, before it reaches zero miles remaining, prevents the filter from completing its cleaning routine and leads to a warning light and a derate.

    DEF must be API-certified and meet ISO 22241; the manual warns that non-certified fluid can damage the system. The maintenance table lists checking and refilling DEF at every service interval rather than at a fixed consumption point. We do not quote a tank capacity or a consumption rate here, because we could not confirm either from the manual.

    Ram publishes no ash-cleaning interval for these pickups. Cummins publishes maintenance material for the B6.7 in commercial and vocational chassis, including its own severe-duty definition, and that document is written for a different application. It does not govern a 2500 or 3500 pickup.

    Towing the Virgin River Gorge

    The northbound climb out of the Gorge is a sustained pull at highway speed, in heat, usually loaded. It is the closest thing Southern Utah has to a standardized load test, and it finds three things.

    Transmission temperature is first. Fluid held near the top of its range ages faster than fluid in a truck that stays in the valley, and that is the reasoning behind Ram attaching an accelerated fluid service to frequent trailer towing. A truck that pulls the Gorge regularly belongs on the towing row regardless of how the fluid looks on the dipstick.

    Brakes are second, on the descent rather than the climb. The exhaust brake takes a share of it, and what it does not take goes into the pads, rotors and fluid. Trailer brake operation and gain setting get checked as part of the same inspection, because a trailer not carrying its share sends everything to the truck.

    Cooling is third. Coolant condition, hose condition, fan operation, and charge air cooler and radiator core cleanliness all get inspected on tow rigs. A core packed with Washington County dust behaves differently at 105 degrees under load than it does anywhere else.

    Front End and Steering on a Heavy Truck

    A 2500 or 3500 carries a heavy front axle before a bumper, a winch or a plow mount is added. The wear points are the ball joints, the track bar and bushings, the drag link and tie rod ends, the steering damper, the steering box and its mounting, and the wheel bearings. On a lifted truck the geometry moves and the loads through those parts move with it.

    Worth an inspection: wander that needs steady correction on the interstate, a shimmy that starts over a bump, uneven inside-edge tire wear, play at the steering wheel, or a clunk on turn-in. Alignment gets set for how the truck sits, including its lift and tire package.

    One specification worth knowing before an axle service: the front and rear axles take 75W-85 HD GL-5 synthetic axle lubricant on the 9.25 front and the 11.5 and 12.0 single-rear-wheel axles, and Mopar GL-5 75W-140 on the 12.0 dual-rear-wheel axle. Limited-slip axles require the Mopar friction modifier if it is not already premixed into the fluid. The transfer case takes Mopar BW44-44 fluid.
