Sand Hollow State Park throws everything at your UTV — red sand dunes, slickrock climbs, and triple-digit heat. Here's the pre-ride checklist MST Motorsports uses before every Sand Hollow trip.

Why Sand Hollow Demands More From Your Machine

Sand Hollow State Park in Hurricane, Utah is one of the most diverse off-road playgrounds in the country. Within a single ride, you can cross deep red sand dunes, technical slickrock ledges, loose wash trails, and rocky hill climbs. That variety is what makes it incredible — and it's also what breaks unprepared machines.

At MST Motorsports in Washington, UT, we service UTVs heading to Sand Hollow every week. The machines that come back on a trailer almost always skipped one of these prep steps.

    1. Clutch and Belt Inspection

Sand riding is the hardest condition for a CVT belt. Low-speed, high-load dune climbs generate extreme heat in the clutch system. Before every Sand Hollow trip, you should:

    • Inspect the belt for glazing, cracks, fraying, or width loss. A belt under spec width will slip under load.
    • Check clutch weights and springs — sand riding benefits from heavier weights and stiffer springs to keep RPMs in the power band.
    • Clean the clutch covers and sheaves — dust buildup causes inconsistent engagement.
    • Verify your clutch calibration matches your tire size. Oversized tires without a clutch kit recalibration will burn belts fast.

We stock belts for Polaris, Can-Am, and Kawasaki platforms and can do a full clutch service same-day. Learn about our clutch repair and service →

    2. Cooling System Check

Summer temperatures at Sand Hollow regularly exceed 110°F. Your UTV's cooling system is already working near capacity at ambient temp — add sand-clogged radiators and low-speed dune riding, and overheating is almost guaranteed without prep.

    • Flush and inspect coolant — old coolant loses its heat transfer efficiency.
    • Clean the radiator fins — compressed air from the engine side out. Sand packs tight.
    • Check fan operation — listen for the fan cycling on at operating temp.
    • Inspect hoses for soft spots, cracks, or loose clamps. Desert heat accelerates rubber degradation.

    3. Shock Service and Valving

Sand Hollow terrain varies dramatically. Dunes want plush, long-travel compression. Slickrock wants firm, controlled rebound. If your shocks haven't been serviced in 50+ hours, they're losing damping performance.

    • Service interval: Every 40–60 hours for desert riding, sooner if you notice fade.
    • Re-valve for terrain: We can adjust compression and rebound valving to match your primary riding style — whether that's dune running or rock crawling.
    • Check shock oil for contamination. Desert dust gets past seals over time.

MST Motorsports does all shock rebuilds in-house for Fox, King, Elka, and Walker Evans. See our shock repair and rebuild service →

    4. Tires and Wheel Torque

Tire selection at Sand Hollow depends on where you're riding:

    • Sand dunes: Paddle tires or sand-specific treads provide traction in loose sand.
    • Slickrock and trails: All-terrain or DOT tires with good sidewall protection.
    • Mixed terrain: An aggressive all-terrain is the best compromise.

Regardless of tire choice, always re-torque your lug nuts before riding. Vibration from previous rides can loosen them. We recommend checking at 25 miles.

    5. Fluids, Filters, and Final Checks

    • Engine oil: Change before the trip if you're within 10 hours of your interval. Sand riding is severe-duty.
    • Air filter: Clean or replace. A clogged filter in dusty conditions robs power and risks engine damage.
    • Differential and transmission fluid: Check levels. Low fluid under heavy load means expensive damage.
    • Brake pads: Inspect thickness. Sand is abrasive and accelerates pad wear.
    • Electrical connections: Wiggle-test accessory wiring. Vibration loosens connections.

Don't Wait Until You're Broken Down at the Dunes

The best Sand Hollow trips start in the shop, not on the trail. A 1-hour pre-ride service at MST Motorsports can prevent a weekend-ending breakdown. We're located at 987 S 1900 E in Washington, Utah — just 15 minutes from Sand Hollow State Park.
