    Back-to-Back Days at Sand Hollow: What Fails on Day Three

    One hard day at Sand Hollow is a known quantity. Three or four consecutive days is a different kind of load, and the failures are different too. What accumulates, and what to check between days.

    One hard day at Sand Hollow is a known quantity. Most machines handle it. What sorts the prepared from the stranded is the third and fourth consecutive day, and the valley gets a lot of those in late September and early October.

    Trail Hero runs 27 September through 4 October 2026 out of Hurricane, staged at the Washington County Fairgrounds and Sand Hollow Resort. Whether you are there for it or just riding the same terrain the same week, the pattern is the same: consecutive long days on sand and slickrock, in heat that has not really broken yet, with no real cool-down between them.

    That changes what breaks. A single ride tends to expose something that was already marginal. Back-to-back days create failures that were not there on Monday.

    Heat that never fully leaves

    The biggest difference between one day and four is that the machine never returns to ambient. A side-by-side that runs hot on day one starts day two with a radiator already packed, oil that has been through a full heat cycle, and a clutch that cooked and cooled once.

    Sand Hollow's sand is fine enough to pass straight through a coarse screen and pack the front of a radiator core from the back side, where you will not see it by looking at the grille. By day three the airflow is measurably down, and the first symptom is usually not a temperature light — it is the clutch running hotter because the whole engine bay is hotter.

    Between days, pull the radiator screen and look at the core itself, not the screen. If you can back-flush it with low pressure from the engine side, do it. Compressed air at high pressure will fold the fins over and make the problem permanent.

    Belts and clutches on day three

    A drive belt is a wear item doing exactly what it was designed to do, under conditions it was not designed for. We have written before about what a belt symptom actually tells you — the short version is that a belt almost never fails on its own. Something else was wrong first.

    On consecutive days, the thing that is usually wrong is heat and glazing. Dune running at partial throttle, long slow climbs, and the stop-start of riding in a group all put the belt in the part of its range where it slips a little and builds heat. Do that for three days and the belt faces glaze, grip drops, and slip increases — which builds more heat. It is a loop that ends with a shred, often with no warning on the ride where it finally goes.

    Between days, look at the belt for glazing and for a shiny, hardened surface rather than just measuring width. Check the clutch sheaves for the same glaze and for sand packed behind the moveable sheave. If the machine has been bogging on the bottom end or feeling lazy off idle, that is a clutch conversation, not a belt conversation.

    Worth knowing: not every platform has a belt. The Can-Am Maverick R uses a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with no CVT and no drive belt, so belt checks do not apply to it — its service points are different.

    Shocks fade before they leak

    Shock fade over consecutive days is real and it is gradual enough that riders adapt to it without noticing. Oil heats, viscosity drops, damping goes soft, and the machine starts using more travel than it did on day one. You feel it as bottoming on hits that were fine yesterday.

    The failure that follows is a blown seal, and once a shock is weeping it will not recover on its own. Check the shaft on each shock for an oil film — run a finger down it. A dry shaft with a clean wiper is fine. An oily shaft that leaves a mark is a shock that is on its way out and should not get another hard day without attention.

    We rebuild Fox, King, Elka and Walker Evans shocks in house, including re-valve, reseal and nitrogen recharge. A shock that has faded from heat is often fine after a rebuild; one that has been run blown for two more days usually needs more.

    Fasteners work loose, then something bends

    This is the one that gets overlooked and causes the expensive damage. Sustained vibration on slickrock backs off fasteners that were torqued correctly. The sequence is always the same: a fastener loosens, the joint starts moving, the movement elongates a hole or wears a bushing, and then a component bends or breaks.

    Between days, put a wrench on the things that matter: wheel nuts, radius rod ends, A-arm pivot bolts, tie rod ends, sway bar links, and shock mounting hardware. You are not re-torquing the whole machine — you are checking the handful of joints where looseness turns into broken parts. Any play you can feel by hand at a rod end is play that needs sorting before the next ride.

    If the steering has developed a vague spot on centre or the machine has started darting in sand it was fine in yesterday, that is usually alignment or a worn joint rather than driver fatigue. Toe that has moved even slightly will chew the inside edge of a front tire over a long weekend.

    Tires and pressure across a temperature swing

    Late September in Washington County still runs hot in the afternoon and drops off sharply at night. Set pressure cold in the morning and it will read several pounds higher by mid-afternoon on the sand, which changes the footprint exactly when you want it consistent.

    Set pressures cold, the same way, each morning, and write the numbers down rather than guessing from the day before.     Check the sidewalls each evening. Slickrock ledges cut sidewalls in ways that hold air overnight and fail under load the next day.

    What to carry

    For a multi-day trip on this terrain, the things that most often turn a recovery into an inconvenience rather than a trailer ride: a spare belt and the tools to change it, a spare rod end or two, tire plugs and a way to inflate, zip ties and safety wire, a quart of the correct oil, and a torque wrench that reads in the range your wheel nuts live in. None of that is exotic. All of it is the difference between fixing something at the staging area and loading up.

    The between-days check, in order

    1. Radiator core — look at the core, not the screen. Clear it from the engine side.
    2. Belt — glazing and hardening, not just width. Clutch sheaves for glaze and packed sand.
    3. Shock shafts — run a finger down each one. Any oil film is a finding.
    4. Fasteners — wheel nuts, radius rods, A-arm pivots, tie rod ends, sway bar links, shock mounts.
    5. Steering feel — a new vague spot or darting means alignment or a joint, not fatigue.
    6. Tires — cold pressures set the same way each morning, sidewalls checked each evening.
    7. Fluids — oil level and colour, coolant level once cold.

    Ten minutes each evening. It catches most of what turns into a broken weekend.
