    AC Diagnostics & Leak Detection

    An AC system that doesn't cool well usually has one of three problems. Low refrigerant from a leak, a failed compressor, or restricted airflow across the condenser or evaporator. Each one looks different on the gauges, and the diagnostic is what tells us which path the repair needs to take.

    We pressure test the system with nitrogen and use UV dye and electronic leak detectors to find slow leaks. We also check compressor clutch engagement, discharge pressure, and cooling fan operation. Recharging a leaky system without finding the leak first is throwing money out the window — the refrigerant just leaks back out in a few weeks.

    Compressor, Condenser & Component Replacement

    When the diagnostic points to a failed component, we replace it — compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, accumulators, or high/low-side hoses. The install follows proper procedure: full evacuation, vacuum hold test, the right amount of compressor oil for the platform, and a measured refrigerant charge by weight.

    Cutting corners on AC work is how you end up replacing the same parts twice. We do it once, correctly, with the right tools — recovery machine, vacuum pump, manifold gauges, and electronic charging scale.

    Heater Core & Climate Controls

    Cold air from the heater, hot air on the wrong side, or a heater that blows ambient temperature usually traces to a failed blend door actuator. Other causes include a stuck thermostat, a plugged heater core, or low coolant. We diagnose and repair the full HVAC system — not just the AC side.

    Heater core replacement on most modern trucks is dash-out work and isn't cheap. We check related components — blower motor, control head, mode doors — while we're in there, so you're not back next winter for a related repair.

    AC & Heat Repair FAQs

    Most often it's low refrigerant from a slow leak. The next most common cause is a failed compressor or compressor clutch. Less commonly, it's a clogged expansion valve, a failed cooling fan, or an electrical issue with the AC control circuit. We start with a pressure test and visual inspection — those two checks usually tell us the cause.

    If your AC system is sealed and working correctly, a recharge should last for years. If it stops cooling within a few months of a recharge, you have a leak, period. Recharging without finding and fixing the leak is wasted money. We use UV dye and electronic detectors to find leaks before recharging.

    Yes — newer trucks (roughly 2017 and up) use R-1234yf instead of R-134a, and the equipment to service them is different. We're set up for both refrigerants and use the correct one for your platform.

    The most common causes are a failed blend door actuator, where air goes through the AC instead of the heater core, or low engine coolant. Other causes are a stuck-open thermostat that prevents the engine from reaching operating temperature, or a plugged heater core. We diagnose all four — the fix is usually one of them, and the price differs significantly between them.

    Absolutely — that's most of what we work on. Lifted trucks, tow rigs, work trucks and modified rigs all still need to keep their drivers cool. We handle AC work on them the same way we'd handle any platform. The components are the same. What changes is routing around aftermarket equipment.
