Truck Pre-Purchase Inspection

Know What You're Buying — Independent Inspections for Used Trucks and Diesels | MST Motorsports | Washington UT

MST Motorsports performs pre-purchase inspections for buyers of used trucks, diesels, Jeeps, Broncos, and SUVs across Washington, St George, and Hurricane. Spending an hour and a couple hundred dollars on an independent inspection before you buy can save you thousands. Used trucks (especially diesels) hide expensive problems behind a fresh wash and a hopeful seller.

Our inspection process covers the mechanical, electrical, and structural condition of the vehicle, plus a scan tool review and a road test. You get a written report with findings, photos, and our honest opinion on whether the truck is worth what's being asked.

    What's Included in the Inspection

    The inspection covers:

Engine condition and leaks

Transmission and transfer case operation

Drivetrain (axles, differentials, driveshafts, U-joints)

Suspension and steering components

Brake system condition and pad/rotor life

Frame and undercarriage inspection for rust, damage, or evidence of off-road abuse

Body and paint inspection for hidden collision damage

Tire condition and matching

Fluid condition (engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid, gear oil)

Electrical system check

On diesels, we add specific checks: blow-by inspection, EGR and DPF status, and glow plug operation. We also run coolant and oil contamination cross-checks and a full scan for stored and pending codes, including codes that have been recently cleared (a common seller trick).

    Diagnostic Scan & Road Test

We connect OE-level scan tools and pull a complete diagnostic report, covering current codes, pending codes, and freeze frame data. On supported platforms, this also includes readiness monitor status and recent code clear history. If a seller cleared codes 50 miles ago, we'll see it.

The road test covers acceleration, transmission shift quality, brake operation, steering and tracking, drivetrain noise, and overall feel. A surprising number of problems only show up under load or at speed — that's why we drive every truck we inspect.

    Written Report & Recommendation

You get a written inspection report covering what we found, what's normal wear, what's an immediate concern, and what's likely to need attention in the near future. We include estimated costs to address the major findings so you can negotiate price or walk away with confidence.

We work for you, not the seller. If the truck has problems, we'll tell you. If it checks out clean, we'll tell you that too. Our job is to give you the information you need to make a good decision.

    Pre-Purchase Inspection FAQs

Plan on leaving the truck with us. Diesels and heavily modified trucks take longer because there's more to inspect. We schedule them by appointment so we have dedicated time and a lift available, and your service advisor sets the expectation at drop-off.

Pricing depends on vehicle type and complexity. A standard truck inspection is typically a few hundred dollars. A diesel or heavily modified truck runs higher. Compared to the cost of a hidden problem on a truck you're about to buy, it's the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Yes — we perform pre-purchase inspections at our shop in Washington, UT. If the seller can drive or trailer the truck to us, we'll get it on the lift and give you a full documented report before you commit. Many out-of-area buyers coordinate this through the seller as part of the deal.

We document everything in the written report with rough cost estimates. You then have leverage to negotiate the price down to cover the repairs, ask the seller to fix specific items, or walk away from the deal entirely. The information is yours to use however you want.

Absolutely — that's a lot of what we inspect. Modifications change the inspection (we look for the installation itself, supporting modifications, and signs of abuse) but the fundamentals are the same. Tell us what we're looking at when you book and we'll plan accordingly.
