    Does a Side-by-Side Need an Alignment? What Darting and Tire Wear Are Telling You

    Most riders never think about aligning a side-by-side, which is why so many of them are darting, wandering and eating the inside edge of a set of tires. What alignment actually controls on a UTV, and why a rock strike or a long-travel kit changes it.

    Yes — and Most Never Get One

    Almost every side-by-side owner knows a truck needs an alignment. Almost none think about it for the machine on the trailer behind the truck, which is strange, because a UTV lives a far harder life than the truck does and has suspension geometry that is every bit as sensitive.

    The reason is mostly historical. Side-by-sides came out of a world of small utility machines that nobody measured. What is riding at Sand Hollow now is a long-travel, high-horsepower vehicle running 30-plus-inch tires at highway-adjacent speeds across rock — and geometry on that machine is not a detail.

    The symptoms are common enough that most riders have learned to live with them without knowing they are symptoms.

    The Machine Darts and Wanders

    You are holding a steady line and the machine keeps picking its own. On a rutted trail it follows every groove. On a fire road you are making constant small corrections just to go straight.

    This is usually toe. Toe is how much the front wheels point in or out relative to each other, measured across the axle. Get it wrong in one direction and the machine wanders because neither wheel is committing to a line. Get it wrong in the other and it becomes twitchy and darty, grabbing at every rut.

    The interesting part is how little it takes. A fraction of an inch of toe across the front axle is the difference between a machine that tracks and one that fights you all day, and the fatigue that comes from making constant corrections is real on a long ride.

    The Steering Wheel Is Not Centered

    Straight ahead, the wheel sits off to one side.

    By itself this is a nuisance rather than a fault — but it means the tie rods are not adjusted evenly, which means the wheel is no longer telling you what the front axle is actually doing. It also makes it much harder to notice when something changes, because you have already normalized a crooked reference point.

    On a machine that spends its life hitting things, that reference point matters more than it does on a car.

    You Are Wearing Out the Inside or Outside Edge of a Tire

    This is the expensive one, and it is the one riders usually notice too late.

    A tire dragged sideways even slightly across every mile of a ride scrubs rubber off one edge. Feather the inside edges of a front pair and you can lose a set of tires long before the tread in the middle is anywhere near done. On the sizes people run here, that is a genuinely costly way to find out the toe was off.

    Run your hand across the tread. If it feels smooth in one direction and sharp-edged in the other, that is a wear pattern, not tread design — and it is telling you the tire has been dragged rather than rolled. Worth checking whenever you have tires and wheels off the machine anyway.

    It Pulls to One Side on Flat Ground

    A consistent pull usually points at something other than toe — a bent steering component, a difference side to side in camber (how far the top of the wheel leans in or out), unequal ride height, or a suspension component that has moved. Tire pressure and uneven tire wear can produce the same feel, which is why a pull is worth measuring rather than adjusting by feel.

    What Actually Knocks a UTV Out of Alignment

    This is where a side-by-side differs from a car, and it is why the interval is not "every couple of years".

    • Rock strikes. A hard hit on a wheel or a tie rod moves geometry immediately. Nothing has to break for the numbers to change.
    • Whoops and repeated hard landings. The suspension is doing exactly its job, and the accumulation still moves things over a season.
    • Any suspension change. A lift, a long-travel kit, new A-arms, different shocks or a spring change all alter ride height, and ride height alters the geometry the machine sits at.
    • A tire or wheel size change. Larger tires and a different wheel offset change the scrub radius and how much any existing misalignment costs you in wear.
    • Replaced steering or suspension parts. Tie rod ends, ball joints, A-arms and steering racks all need the machine measured afterwards. Fitting the part is half the job.
    • A season of hard riding. Bushings wear, and worn bushings let geometry move under load even when the static measurement looks acceptable.

    Put simply: if you hit something hard, changed the suspension, changed the tires, or replaced a steering component, the machine has almost certainly moved.

    Why a Tape Measure Gets You Part of the Way

    Measuring toe with a tape between the front tires is a real technique and it is better than nothing. It is also working against a lot of variables.

    Tire lugs are not a flat reference surface, and knobby tires are the worst possible thing to measure against. Runout in a wheel changes the number depending on where you take it. The measurement has to be taken at the same height front and rear of the wheel, and at the correct ride height with the suspension loaded the way it sits when riding. And toe is only one of the angles — it tells you nothing about camber, caster, or whether the two sides are even close to each other.

    Most importantly, a tape measure has no way to tell you where the thrust line is — whether the rear of the machine is actually pointed the same way as the front. A machine that measures correctly at the front and is still crabbing down the trail is a rear geometry problem, and no amount of front toe adjustment fixes it.

    What a Real Alignment Measures

    MST runs a Hunter HawkEye Elite alignment system, and a side-by-side goes on it the same as anything else. What that gets you is numbers instead of impressions:

    • Toe, individually for each wheel rather than as a single total, which is what centers the steering wheel properly instead of splitting the error.
    • Camber, side to side, which shows tire loading and shows up a bent component.
    • Caster where the platform allows adjustment, which is what returns the steering to center and gives the machine stability at speed.
    • Thrust angle, so the rear is measured against the front rather than assumed.
    • A before-and-after printout, so you can see what it was, what it is now, and what changed.

    That last one matters more than it sounds. A number you can see is the difference between being told the machine was out and knowing by how much.

    Setting a machine up is also not the same as setting a car up. A side-by-side that spends its life in the dunes and one built for high-speed desert running want different things, and a machine on a long-travel kit is a different problem from a stock one. The right specification depends on how the machine is built and where it is actually ridden — which is a conversation, not a lookup table.

    When It Is Worth Doing

    • After any suspension or steering work, including a lift or long-travel kit. This is not optional; it is the second half of the install.
    • After a hard hit you felt through the wheel.
    • When you fit new tires, so the new set does not inherit the wear pattern that finished the old one.
    • When you notice darting, wandering, a pull, or an off-center wheel.
    • Before a big trip, alongside the rest of a pre-ride check. Finding it in the shop is better than finding it at a staging area.

    Nobody Else Around Here Is Set Up For This

    Alignment shops in this area are automotive shops, and powersports shops mostly do not have an alignment rack. That is the whole reason so many machines in this valley have never been measured — not because it does not matter, but because there was nowhere obvious to take it.
