A standard alignment can only adjust within the range the existing hardware allows. If the geometry changes from the lift exceed that adjustment range — which they often do on lifts of 3 inches or more — no amount of alignment adjustment will achieve proper angles. This is where geometry correction with aftermarket control arms becomes necessary before alignment.
Caster is the most critical alignment angle affected by lifting. Factory trucks typically run 3-5 degrees of positive caster for stable, predictable steering. A 4-6 inch lift can reduce caster by 2+ degrees — enough to make the truck feel vague and wandering at highway speeds, with poor steering return after turns.
With adjustable upper control arms, we restore caster to factory or above-factory specifications. More caster generally improves straight-line stability and steering feel on lifted trucks. We typically target 4-6 degrees of positive caster on lifted trucks, depending on the platform and lift height. Premature tire wear on lifted trucks is extremely common — and extremely expensive. The most common tire wear patterns on lifted trucks include inner-edge wear (excessive negative camber), outer-edge wear (excessive positive camber), and feathering or scalloping (toe issues).
